During his teen years Steve lived in the Cambridgeshire fenland village of Willingham. It was there with his brother that he developed a fascination for the natural world and spent many happy hours at weekends and holidays sitting by the river, observing the abundant orchard birds, or cycling along the seemingly endless straight roads of East Anglia's flatlands.
